Image intensifier tubes can have many different kinds of defects, which somehow affect the image being produced.

Some defects are worse than others. Causes for defects include, but are not limited to:

  • Imperfections of manufacturing
  • Aging of the components
  • Exposure to bright light (sometimes even when powered off)
  • Humidity damage
  • Mechanical shock damage
  • Incorrect handling

Blemish[edit | edit source]

A blemish describes an area of the image produced by the image intensifier remaining black.
