History

According to Photonis, the origin of the company can be seen in the opening of a new manufacturing facility of Philips in 1937.[1] As WWII was looming over Europe, the Dutch electronics company chose Brive-la-Gaillarde in the southwest of france as a new manufacturing location for microwave tubes and other electrical components.[2] Philips Brive continued growing after WWII, even working on radar and nuclear power projects, cooperating with Laboratoire d'Electrophysique de Paris (LEP).[2] In 1960, the factory was flooded, taking two years to build a new factory.[1][2]

In 1963, Philips becomes HYPERELEC.[1] New products included cathode ray tubes comissioned for the French Atomic Energy Comission and microchannel wafers.

In 1937, a new facility of the Philips Group is opened in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France.

In 1942, a new facility called Burle of the RCA Corporation is opened in Lancaster, U.S.A., manufacturing microwave and radio tubes for the U.S. Navy.

In 1963, Philips becomes HYPERELEC, a Philips Company.

In 1970, the company Delft Electronic Products, BV (DEP) is opened in Roden, Netherlands. It manufactured the first image intensifiers.

In 1986, HYPERELEC becomes RTC-COMPELEC, still part of the Philips Group.

In the same year, RCA Corporation is acquired by General Electric.

In 1987, General Electric becomes BURLE Industries.

In 1990, RTC-COMPELEC becomes PHILIPS COMPOSANTS, still part of the Philips Group.

In 1994, PHILIPS COMPOSANTS becomes PHILIPS PHOTONIQUE, still part of the Philips Group.

In 1998, PHILIPS Brive is rebranded to Photonis.

In 2005, Photonis Technologies SAS was formed from a 2005 merger of three separate companies.[1]
