The Simrad KDN250F is a handheld bi-ocular night vision observation system consisting of 2 devices. A night vision scope, as well as a daytime scope. It incorporates an extraordinarily complex optical system that reflects and bends light to create the resulting night vision-daylight fusion image. The KDN250F was designed and developed by the Norwegian company Simrad Optronics in the early 90's. The "early" version weighs <1.5kg and the design has been modified over the years by Rheinmetall. This military observation device offers observation under daylight and at night or combined and fuses natural colors with the analog night vision image.
Simrad KD250 Bi-Ocular optics
The Simrad KD250 has x3.5 magnification, It is used as the optical unit for the Simrad KN250F clip-on device resulting together as “KDN250F” or it can be used standalone handheld for daylight observation. It has bi-ocular type daylight optics offering an IPD adjustment between 58-73mm with a field of view of 12°. Eye relief is approximately 25mm. The focus of the KD250 Is perfectly set for a big spectrum of sight and is not adjustable. Rather it has dioptric adjustable eyepieces from -3 to +3.
Simrad KN250F Clip On NVD
The Simrad KN250F is itself a standalone night vision attachment device with a catadioptric F1.1 80mm objective lens, designed to keep a bright and smooth image with magnification optics (used as eyepieces). The KN250F offers a kind of projection technology with two parallel fields of views/channels by an optical projection module, which is located right below the objective lens. This ultimate solution allows the usage of any daytime optics while the KN250F is mounted without having to remove it.
This has some similarities to a COTI (Clip-On-Thermal-Imager) but is an analog night vision device, being a completely different technology. It works with any x3.5 - x8 magnification optics and can be used with scopes, cameras etc. The focusable range is 25 meters to infinity and it uses Gen2+ MX-10160 non-inverted tubes. Operation runtime with two AA 1.5V batteries is 80 hours at 20C°.
